Easter Mechatronics Workshop

  • SFU Burnaby 8888 University Drive East Burnaby, BC, V5A 0A9 Canada (map)

Taught by Engineering students at SFU!

Learn to design, build and code robots in C++!

Develop critical thinking and teamwork skills!

Engineer and build your own robot using VEX Robotics kits!

Prepare for high school robotics competitions!

This 2 day program teaches students in grades 5-7 the foundations they need to follow an Engineering Design Process from the problem statement, requirements, conceptualization, and design reviews to final product. On Day 01, students will learn foundational mechanical design and programming principles then build and code a rover with instructor guidance. On Day 02, the students will apply their learning from Day 01 by engaging in an Engineering Design Process to build a robot for a given problem statement.

The same design processes and skills from University Engineering programs and high school robotics competitions will be taught by Senior Engineering students who have mastered such processes and practiced them in actual Engineering work environments.

By the end of this program, students will

  • Understand and be able to implement Engineering principles to solve problems and complete projects

  • Have a strong foundation in programming logic required to make a control system for a basic robot

  • Have a strong foundation in physics / mechanical design, specifically for VEX robots

  • Increase their desire for a future in Engineering / Applied Science / STEM
